There are no connecting trains running from Western Europe through to the Baltic states. However, it’s possible to do the journey from Western Europe to Tallinn by train via an indirect route. Getting to Estonia by boat

Estonia has over 40 ports, most of these being for trade. The Port of Tallinn (www.portoftallinn.com) is the largest.

Cruise ships

Estonia is a popular stop in the summer for cruise ship itineraries touring the Baltics, Russia and Scandinavia. Fred Olsen (www.fredolsencruises.com), Oceania (www.oceaniacruises.com) and P&O Cruises (www.pocruises.com) all call at Port of Tallinn.

Ferry operators

A ferry runs between Helsinki and Tallinn with departures around every few hours (more frequent between May and September); the route is operated by Tallink (tel: +372 640 9808; www.tallink.com) and the crossing takes under 2 hours. Tallink also runs a daily ferry service once a day between Stockholm and Tallinn ports which takes 15 hours. Passengers must take a passport or some form of ID before travelling.
