Travelling to Qatar by Rail
There are currently no rail services in Qatar, but plans are afoot to construct a railway network connecting cities within Qatar as well as creating links to neighbouring countries, to be completed by 2030. See Qatar Rail (www.qr.com.qa) for more details.
Driving to Qatar
Routes 5 and 59 link Doha with Saudi Arabia to the South; Route 59 then joins up with Route 95 into the UAE. With car insurance for both countries, the Qatar-Saudi border is open to residents of Qatar, Saudi Arabia and UAE. However, getting across the border can be difficult for foreign nationals, which means that the reality of crossing the borders is that car hire companies rarely allow drivers to leave Qatar.
Driving note
Driving across borders from Qatar into Saudi Arabia is impossible for female travellers, as women are not allowed to drive in Saudi Arabia.
Getting to Qatar by boat
Doha and Umm Said are the main ports. The water traffic is mostly commercial.
Cruise ships
Some cruise lines include Doha on their Middle Eastern itineraries, including MSC Cruises (www.msccruises.com) and Hapag-Lloyd (www.hl-cruises.com).
